If your sensitivity is mild, you might start by trying a toothpaste designed specifically for sensitive teeth. These special toothpastes contain ingredients that help insulate and calm the nerves of your teeth. If that doesn’t work, we recommend scheduling a dental appointment where we can check for dental problems and clues about what is triggering your discomfort.
Some of our common recommendations include:
- Using a soft toothbrush and brushing gently to prevent gum recession
- Avoiding very hot, cold, or acidic foods (at least until we get you comfortable)
- Treating GERD and acid reflux symptoms to protect your gums and tooth enamel
- Toothpastes designed for sensitive teeth or enamel loss
- Periodontal treatment or tooth repair as needed
- Stress reduction techniques to prevent teeth clenching and grinding
- A nightguard appliance if your sensitivity is due to grinding your teeth at night
- Using fluoridated toothpastes and rinses to help insulate the sensitive area
- Specific treatment to protect or repair areas where gums have receded
