How to Tell if You Have an Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth is a serious infection around the gums or root of the tooth.  The most common causes include gum disease, cavities, and trauma.

If you are suspicious you have an abscessed tooth it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible.  The infection can be dangerous for both your tooth and your health.  Here are some signs that you may have an infected tooth:

  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Fever
  • Throbbing pain
  • Bad taste in mouth or bad breath
  • Swollen neck glands
  • Inflammation around the tooth
  • Feeling generally ill
  • An open draining sore on the side of the gum

It is important to note that sometimes the nerve of the tooth dies and you do not have any pain.  The infection can still be dangerous and needs to be treated quickly.

If you think you have an abscessed tooth your dentist is your greatest ally.  They will know how to stop the pain and infection, as well as restore your tooth.
