It’s Not Just a Teeth Cleaning Anymore

t’s easy to lose track of time or delay seeing your dental hygienist because you are busy or money is tight.  It’s just a teeth cleaning, right?  It may seem like that, but there is more at risk here then just a little extra plaque.

The plaque your hygienist removes from your teeth is made up of bacteria. The harder tartar deposits are the by product of bacteria colonies. Skipping a professional cleaning gives these bacteria colonies an opportunity to grow beyond what your body can handle.

In your mouth, this puts you at risk for gum disease, tooth loss, and cavities. Many people don’t realize that when we talk about periodontal disease, also called gum disease, that we are talking about a serious infection in their mouth.

And, that is not all. Bacteria in your mouth gets into your blood stream easily through swallowing or being absorbed through thin mouth tissue. That means that it can spread throughout your body and become an extra, unnecessary burden for your immune system.

There is one more thing you should know. Scientific research has linked many major diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease to chronic inflammation and gum disease is one of the most common sites of chronic inflammation in the body.

Our goal is not to scare you or talk all doom and gloom. We feel it is important that you have the knowledge you need to make informed choices about your health.

Dental care is no longer just about teeth.  It’s about taking care of your overall health.
